Although vigorous public debate continues on the causes and possible effects of global warming, actions are being taken around the globe by governments, individual companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other institutions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Many companies in the electronics sector are implementing measures to quantify and reduce the carbon footprint of their operations and products. For example, the Hewlett-Packard Corporation recently announced the quantification of the carbon footprints of their top-tier suppliers. These actions are driven not only by environmental urgency, but also by cost saving opportunities, anticipated regulations and social responsibility commitments.
