Semiconductor, solar and MEMs manufacturing today is faced with an increasingly difficult task of producing more complex products at lower costs than ever before. Worldwide competition is driving much of this pressure. The sharp rise in commodity prices since January 2000 has raised the visibility of “conservation” to the front of many operations’ agendas. Taken together with the high likelihood of some sort of carbon emissions tax structure, there are many pressures converging on the need for Fab operations to tightly control input costs.
