WELCOME to Issue 3 of Fab Engineering &
Operations magazine.
Here we are - Issue 3 of Fab Engineering & Operations. Unbelievable that we're
on our third issue when it still feels like we've just launched. It's been a
full six months since Issue 1 hit the www and we're still growing fast. What
a six months it's been! Just six months ago the iPhone was the "must-have" gadget,
the world looked rosy as the industry got ready for the new year and it was
still a sound investment to buy a house. Now, more then ever, cost control,
efficiency and productivity are the things that make a difference between a
profit and a loss in these lean times. We all face an uncertain future: fab,
fab-lite, fabless? Will 200 mm remain viable; will the West remain a competitive
place for site manufacturing; will China swallow us all; will direct materials
follow the trend of everything in the world and spiral out of control; will
we see 450mm - ever? This is a time like no other in the semiconductor industry's
history: an uncertain industry in an uncertain economy in a fickle consumer
marketplace that is suffering a very jittery start to 2008. In such cost-conscious
times, FEO remains a beacon of information for manufacturing fabs of all kinds.
We aim to continue to bring you the information that's been ignored by all else,
the information that will help you to remain competitive through the tough times
in order to see you again when things look better.
Thanks for reading!

About FEO
Brought to you by the publishers of Future Fab International,
Fab Engineering and Operations (FEO) is an electronic magazine
dedicated to mainstream device fabrication plants (fabs) of all
shapes and sizes. From silicon to compound semiconductors, from
DRAM to microcontrollers, the editorial focus is not on the process
technologies used to manufacture these devices but instead on the
operations and engineering challenges behind running such
complex factories. FEO is the first in its field to focus on these
topics specifically, concentrating on the issues that fabs face day in
and day out. The magazine will not be addressing news or press
releases; instead, through the unique editorial model first used in
Future Fab International, the editorial direction will be guided by an
editorial board comprised of engineers, fab managers and industry
specialists in their respective fields. Jointly they will act as a
steering committee, therefore ensuring the impartiality and quality
of the papers and articles within.
